Benzoyl peroxide products have long been known as some of the most effective acne treatment products .How does benzoyl peroxide work and what does benzoyl peroxide do to acne? Why is it so effective, and are there other ingredients that is equally effective? Once someone knows how benzoyl peroxide works, they are able to see the possible side effects, advantages and disadvantages of this type of acne treatment

What does benzoyl peroxide do? When applied to the skin, benzoyl peroxide creates oxygen. The bacterium that causes acne is not able to stay alive once it reacts to oxygen. This is why benzoyl peroxide products are so effective because they wipe out the bacteria that cause acne. This oxidizing action of benzoyl peroxide products is similar to the way hydrogen peroxide disinfects cuts.

There are many benzoyl peroxide products available. Many can be purchased without a prescription. Some products such as cleansers, foam, or lotions often require a prescription. Consult your health care provider or skin care specialist on the choice of the product that is best for you. Getting any product that contains benzoyl peroxide into your eyes, inside your nose or mouth, or on any areas of broken skin may cause irritation. If this occurs, flush the area with plenty of water. Benzoyl peroxide can bleach hair or fabrics, so users should try to avoid contact with clothing, furniture and hair when the product is in use.

Skin reactions such as peeling, itching, irritation, and reddened skin may occur, especially at the start of treatment. If you do have any side effects such as these it is recommended that you contact your health care provider as soon as possible. You may need to apply smaller amounts of the drug or use it less often. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

I f your skin care specialist or health care provider has you using this medication, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Most of the people who use this type of acne medication generally do not have any serious side effects.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely. If an allergic reaction occurs users should seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, as well as severe dizziness and trouble breathing.

Before you begin using a benzoyl peroxide acne treatment product, you should tell your doctor, skin care specialist or pharmacist if you think you may be allergic to it. Also are you needed to let them know if you have any other allergies? A benzoyl peroxide acne treatment product can contain inactive ingredients such as dyes or perfumes that can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Before using this medication, tell your health care provider or pharmacist your medical history, so they can be sure you will be able to avoid any possible side effects.

A benzoyl peroxide medication may possibly make you more sensitive to the sun. When using this type of product, you should avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths, and sunlamps. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.

It is not generally recommended to use benzoyl peroxide acne treatment medications if you are pregnant. They should be used only when clearly needed and you and your health care provider have discussed the risks and benefits of this type of medication. Women who are breastfeeding should also consult their health care providers before using benzoyl peroxide products as it is not known if the drug passes through to breast milk.

Your healthcare professionals should already be aware of any possible drug interactions and need to be monitoring you for them. Remember before you have a prescription written out or filled, let your health care provider and pharmacists know of all prescriptions you are currently taking. It is wise to have a list of your medications with you when you talk to your skin care professional or health care provider as well as a copy on file at your pharmacy.

Benzoyl peroxide topical products should never be used on skin that is sunburned, wind burned, dry, chapped, irritated or broken. You should also avoid using benzoyl peroxide products on open wounds or outbreaks of eczema Most health care providers and skin care specialist will recommend that you wait until these conditions have healed before using this type of medication.

You should definitely avoid using any type of skin or hair products that can cause irritation. These include harsh soaps, shampoos, or skin cleansers, hair coloring or permanent chemicals, hair removers or waxes, or skin products with alcohol, spices, astringents, or lime. Do not use other medicated skin products unless your doctor has told you to. Do not use other benzoyl peroxide topical if you are also using tretinoin as these medications are known to cause severe skin irritation.

2-hydroxybenzoic acid is a white crystalline substance with a bitter aftertaste. It is commonly used as a fungicide or in making aspirin or dyes or perfumes. It is also more commonly known as salicylic acid. The two most common uses for this chemical compound are aspirin and as a treatment for acne and eczema.

It comes from the willow tree, bark of which the substance. It is a type of hydroxy acid. This colorless organic compound in crystal form that is generally used in organic synthesis processes. It is derived from the metabolism of salicin. In addition to being a compound that is chemically similar to but not identical to the active component of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), it is probably best known for its use in anti-acne treatments. These derivatives are better known as salicylates.

Hippocrates wrote in the 5th century BC about a bitter powder extracted from willow bark that could ease aches and pains and reduce fevers. This remedy was also mentioned in texts from ancient Sumer, Lebanon, and Assyria. The Cherokee and other Native Americans used an infusion of the bark for fever and other medicinal purposes for centuries. The medicinal part of the plant is the inner bark and was used as a pain reliever for a variety of ailments.

Natural sources of salicylic acid can come from fruits and vegetables. This is particularly true in blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupes, dates, raisins, guavas, apricots, green pepper, olives, tomatoes, radish, mushrooms and chicory. Some herbs and spices contain quite high amounts, although meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy products all have little to no salicylates. Of the legumes, seeds, nuts, and cereals, only almonds, water chestnuts and peanuts have significant amounts

Salicylic acid is known for its ability to ease aches and pains and reduce fevers. This knowledge has been around since ancient time. Salicylic acid was used as an anti-inflammatory drug. Some scientific research has shown that the compound can be an essential micronutrient in the human diet, potentially qualifying as a vitamin, namely Vitamin S.

Salicylic acid and its derivatives are used commonly used as ingredients of some rubefacient products. For example, methyl salicylate is used in liniment to soothe joint and muscle pain, and choline salicylate is used topically to relieve the pain of aphthous ulcers.

As with other beta hydroxy acids, salicylic acid is a key ingredient in many skin-care products for the treatment of acne, psoriasis, calluses, corns, keratosis pilaris, and warts It works as a keratolytic, bacteriocide and comedolytic agent by causing the cells of the epidermis to shed more readily, opening clogged pores and neutralizing bacteria within, preventing pores from clogging up again by constricting pore diameter, and allowing room for new cell growth Because of its effect on skin cells, salicylic acid is used in several shampoos used to treat dandruff.

Although toxic in large quantities, salicylic acid is used as a food preservative and as bactericidal and an antiseptic. With some anyone with sensitivity to the compound, small doses can be harmful

Topical solutions of the beta-hydroxy compound is known to be capable of penetrating and breaking-down fats and lipids, making it capable of causing moderate chemical burns of the skin if at very high concentrations (such as near or actually the majority ingredient) within a solvent. It is capable of damaging the lining of pores in such cases if the solvent is alcohol, acetone, or oil. Over-the-counter limits are set at 2% for topical left on the face and 3% for those expected to be washed off, such as acne cleansers or shampoo. Precautions must be taken if one handles large amounts of the acid, and protective gloves are recommended for any repeat, prolonged exposure. A mild version salicylic acid is often sold for wart removal. This should not be applied to the face or be used for acne treatment. Even for wart removal, such a solution should only be applied twice a day – more frequent use may lead to an increase in side effects without an increase in efficacy

If it is ingested, salicylic acid may possibly have an ototoxic effect the inhibits prestin. It can potentially cause loss of hearing in persons with a zinc deficiency Currently there aren’t any studies specifically looking at topical salicylic acid in pregnancy. Oral salicylic acid has not been associated with an increase in malformations if used during the first trimester, but use in late pregnancy has been associated with bleeding, especially intracranial bleeding. The risks of aspirin late in pregnancy are probably not relevant for a topical exposure to salicylic acid, even late in the pregnancy, because of its low systemic levels. The compound is commonly used in a great number of non-prescriptive dermatological agent with little or no teratogenicity potential.

With its many uses, both externally and internally, this compound can truly be deemed one of nature’s miracle drugs.

Hydrogen peroxide and benzoyl peroxide may have similar sounding names, but are definitely two different chemicals with totally different uses in the medical and consumer related industries.

Hydrogen peroxide is an inorganic compound that consists of two oxygen atoms covalently bonded to each other .Each oxygen atom is also bonded to a hydrogen atom. Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used to disinfect wounds.

Benzoyl peroxide is a complex organic compound. Like hydrogen peroxide it has two oxygen atoms covalently bonded to one another. Instead of hydrogen, each oxygen atom in the peroxide group is bonded to a carbon atom which is then double-bonded to another oxygen. It is commonly used in treating acne.

Hydrogen peroxide’s chemical representation is H2O2. It has uses in industry in its purest form but the product available to most of us over-the-counter is usually only 3% hydrogen peroxide and 97% water. It breaks down quickly when exposed to light so it generally comes in brown bottles that filter out the sun’s rays. It is known for its antibacterial qualities. The pure stuff is dangerous if not used correctly. There are also 30%-35% high strength solutions on the commercial market, typically found in health food stores but also sold as a disinfectant.

There is still a great deal of controversy in the use of hydrogen peroxide for either orally or through injection to treat a variety of internal ailments including arthritis and cancer. Proponents say that the oxygen released by the breakdown of the hydrogen peroxide is medicinal. Opponents say there isn’t good evidence of the health benefits and that there are circumstances in which hydrogen peroxide can be dangerous. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have yet to approve high strength hydrogen peroxide products for internal use and considered them dangerous. In July, 2006, the FDA issued a warning about the high strength hydrogen peroxides, saying they could lead to serious health risks and even death. A warning from the BC Cancer Agency in Canada said that over a three year period 6 children were seriously poisoned and one died from drinking the high strength hydrogen peroxide. They report one near-fatal case of an adult ingesting high strength hydrogen peroxide.

Benzoyl peroxide is a common acne treatment. It is typically applied to the affected areas in gel or cream form, in concentrations of 2.5% increasing through the usually effective 5% to up to 10%. Research suggests that 5 and 10% concentrations are not significantly more effective than 2.5%, and 2.5% is usually better tolerated, though the majority of major studies comparing it to other treatments use the higher concentrations. Benzoyl peroxide commonly causes skin dryness and s irritation, although the skin develops tolerance after a week or so. A small percentage of people are much more sensitive to it and liable to suffer burning, itching, peeling and possibly swelling. The recommended method is to apply a low concentration and then build up a tolerance. Once the skin can tolerate the treatment, users can begin increasing the quantity or concentration and gain a higher level tolerance may give better subsequent acne clearance. The compound works as a peeling agent to increase skin turnover and clear pores. This reduces the bacterial count there as well as using an antimicrobial. It is often combined with salicylic acid, sulfur, erythromycin or clindamycin; this is known as a combination drug benzoyl peroxide/clindamycin. Benzoyl peroxide can also be given with adapalene, a synthetic retinoid, in adapalene/benzoyl peroxide, a unique formulation considering most retinoid are generally deactivated by peroxides and acids.

Other common uses for benzoyl peroxide include dyeing hair, and as an active ingredient in teeth whitening systems. It is also used in the preparation of flour, and can be used as an initiator and catalyst for polyester thermoset resins. Benzoyl peroxide is often used as an alternative compound instead of the more hazardous methyl ethyl ketone peroxide.

Typically a is 2.5% to 10% concentration of benzoyl peroxide is used for prescription and over-the-counter drug preparations acne treatments. Higher concentrations of benzoyl peroxide are also used for hair bleach and teeth whitening. Benzoyl peroxide, like most peroxides, is a powerful bleaching agent. Contact with fabrics or hair can cause permanent color dampening almost immediately. Even secondary contact can cause bleaching. For example, contact with a towel that has been used to wash off benzoyl peroxide-containing hygiene products. Another use is in the paint industry. Benzoyl peroxide is used as a hardener in order to start the polymerization process in resin. These PMMA resins can be polymerized with Benzoyl Peroxide.

Both of these natural compounds are exceptionally useful. Although their common names sound alike and they share similar chemical features, they are definitely used for different things. Each has their useful qualities and both can be dangerous to someone’s health if used incorrectly.

There are several ingredients found in acne medications, but the most commonly found is benzoyl peroxide. This compound is renowned for its breakout fighting properties and is generally safe to use for all skin types. Before using benzoyl peroxide, consult a pharmacist or physician to determine if it will fit into your current skin regimen.

How to Use?

As previously stated, benzoyl peroxide is most commonly used for the treatment of acne. Usually, the dosage begins at the smallest available strength and is gradually increased to reap all of the medicinal benefits, while avoiding the harsh side effects of overuse. To achieve maximum results, benzoyl peroxide should be applied to well-cleansed and thoroughly dried areas. It may be used once or twice or day and should not be used as a spot treatment; this compound works best as an all-over acne medication.

Remember that while treating breakouts with benzoyl peroxide products use extreme caution while cleansing and medicating the affected areas. Vigorous scrubbing or excessive rubbing can irritate the skin and further sensitize it to the some-what harsh effects of the compound. Gently rinse the skin and pat dry with a soft cloth; then, lightly smooth the solution onto your skin with delicate strokes.

How Benzoyl Peroxide Works?

Benzoyl peroxide is an organic compound that works efficiently and effectively to rid the skin of blemish causing bacteria and pore-clogging residue; it does this in two ways. One, benzoyl peroxide aerates the skin and introduces oxygen into the affected areas. The bacterium that causes acne cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment and will begin to die off. The second way that benzoyl peroxide fights acne is by flushing the pores and removing dead or damaged skin cells to prevent further breakouts before they start. The combination of these two blemish fighting activities results in clearer skin that is less prone to breakouts – so long as the compound is used on a regular basis.

Possible Side Effects

As with most topical acne treatments, common side effects include redness, drying, or irritation in the affected area; some flaking or peeling may also occur. Typically, continued use of benzoyl peroxide allows the skin much needed time to acclimate to the compound and these side effects will either be greatly diminished or disappear completely. Other possible side effects of benzoyl peroxide use include excessive dryness, flaking, redness, burning, and a tightened feeling of the skin. Rarely, rash, itching, or swelling may occur; if you experience any of these side effects, immediately discontinue use and seek emergency medical attention.

In order to avoid experiencing negative side effects, follow all directions that accompany the benzoyl peroxide product or those given to you by a doctor or pharmacist. If irritation occurs within the first few days of use, reduce the amount of product applied, decrease the number of daily applications, or only use benzoyl peroxide medications on a rotating basis. Once the skin has acclimated to the benzoyl peroxide product, gradually begin to use the product more often until you have reached the dosage and application schedule recommended to you by a medical professional.

There are many natural compounds that are commonly used to fight acne and other related skin blemishes. Oftentimes, the available over-the-counter and prescription medications contain either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as a breakout fighting ingredient. For the treatment of facial acne, both of these compounds provide positive results when used properly and for extended periods of time, but what about for other areas of the body? Benzoyl peroxide body wash is a product that is often used to fight body acne – particularly the breakouts that occur on the upper shoulders and mid-back region; this type of breakout is often referred to as bacne.

How Benzoyl Peroxide Body Wash Works

Benzoyl peroxide body wash works much the same way as facial scrubs and treatments containing the same or similar main ingredients. Benzoyl peroxide does two things to treat and prevent acne. First of all, it aerates the pores and kills breakout causing bacteria. Secondly, this organic compound clears the pores of the bacteria while flushing out dead cells. It is for these two reasons that benzoyl peroxide body wash is a popular treatment option for body acne; not only does it treat acne symptoms, it also prevents them breakouts from occurring in the first place.

Typical Usage Instructions

In order to efficiently and effectively get rid of acne breakouts that occur on areas other than the face and neck, there are a few steps that should be followed to maximize the effectiveness of benzoyl peroxide body wash.

Wash your entire body with a medicated body wash that includes at least 2.5% benzoyl peroxide as an active ingredient; concentrate on the area that are prone to breakouts. Let the benzoyl peroxide body wash rest on the skin for 2-3 minutes before rinsing. Allowing the body wash to sit on the skin for a small period of time will give the solution adequate time to penetrate the pores and get rid of excess oils and irritants.

Exfoliation is a key step to getting rid of body acne. Perform this step after using the benzoyl peroxide body wash so that the physical act of light scrubbing will reach deeper into the pores. Be sure not to get scrub too roughly, for this will increase irritation and redness.

Moisturize with an oil-free, preferably medicated lotion; benzoyl peroxide body wash can dry out the skin, so it is important to replace necessary moisture for the skin to be balanced and blemish-free. If a non-medicated moisturizer cannot be found, use a non-comedogenic lotion instead.

Following these steps will ensure that the benzoyl peroxide body wash that you use will be as effective as possible.

Other Tips

Benzoyl peroxide body wash is an excellent treatment option when combating body acne. Other things to keep in mind include spot treating with acne medication cream and wearing loose-fitting clothing. If your undergarments are tight or constricting, consider switching to other options that are made from cotton and allow the skin to breathe; this reduces the amount of irritation due to the continuous movement of fabric against inflamed skin.

Those plagued by breakouts and acne eruptions have an old and trusted ally; benzoyl peroxide has long been heralded for its uses in fighting pimples and similar blemishes. Of late, the effects of various concentrations of this compound have been studied, and the results are quite shocking. For years, a 10 benzoyl peroxide solution has been thought to be the best concentration to combat acne breakouts. Recent investigations have shown that this tidbit of knowledge is true – to a certain degree.

Background Information

Benzoyl peroxide is likely the most frequently used compound in acne fighting medications and treatments. Regardless of the origination of the medicine, varying concentrations of this acne fighting component, 10 benzoyl peroxide in particular, are found as the main active ingredient in nearly all acne treatment systems from dime store products to special order regimens.

The 10 benzoyl peroxide solution has been heavily relied upon for decades as a popular and inexpensive treatment for skin blemishes. Despite its many fierce competitors, 10 benzoyl peroxide continues to reign as the best acne treatment compound readily available.

Oftentimes, this concentration is the first treatment option chosen for those suffering from mild to moderate breakouts.

How It Works?

The bacteria responsible for acne breakouts cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment; 10 benzoyl peroxide works by oxygenating the pores and killing the acne causing bacteria. Once the bacteria begin to die off, the number of breakouts and blemishes is greatly reduced.

Also, the 10 benzoyl peroxide works to eliminate and prevent breakouts by flushing the excess skin cells out of the pores; whether these cells are dead or damaged, 10 benzoyl peroxide clears the debris and decreases the chances of breakouts caused by blocked pores.

Once breakouts have been eliminated, continued use of 10 benzoyl peroxide is recommended to prevent further acne conditions from arising. Unfortunately, this is a common practice with most acne treatment systems and cannot be avoided.

Although many of these same functions are performed by other concentrations, the 10 benzoyl peroxide solution is recommended for those suffering from long-term mild to moderate acne.

Using 10 Benzoyl Peroxide

This particular concentration of benzoyl peroxide can cause skin sensitivity within the first few weeks of use; it is highly recommended that users follow their physician’s or pharmacist’s orders in regards to dosage and usage instructions to prevent unpleasant side effects.

The first thing to remember about using 10 benzoyl peroxide is that the skin must be cleaned of excess oils and residues before use. Always begin by gently washing the affected areas with a mild cleanser; do not scrub the skin as this may cause irritation. Apply the recommended dosage of 10 benzoyl peroxide and allow the solution to fully absorb into the skin. Finally, use an oil-free moisturizer to combat any dryness and irritation that may occur.

It is very important to treat the affected areas with ease and a gentle touch. Being overly aggressive or rough with the affected areas can cause further inflammation and negate the effects of the 10 benzoyl peroxide solution.

Benzoyl peroxide is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter and prescription medications. While this compound is used as a bleaching agent for flour, hair dyes, and teeth whitening kits, it’s most wide-spread use is in acne medications. Although there is an ongoing debate as to which concentration works best to alleviate the outbreaks caused by hormones and possible irritants, it is commonly held that 2.5 benzoyl peroxide works as well as its higher-concentration counterparts – without the harsh side effects. As with all medications, consult your doctor or pharmacist to determine its suitability before using any new skin regimens.

What is Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide is an organic compound that is a part of the peroxide family. This particular grouping is well-known for its medical and cosmetic uses. In the case of 2.5 benzoyl peroxide, it is almost exclusively used in acne treatments and blemish applications.

Using 2.5 Benzoyl Peroxide

There are several different methods used to treat acne, and most come with their own step-by-step instructions. Generally speaking though, the methods and treatments applied while using 2.5 benzoyl peroxide follow a standard pattern.

Step 1: Cleanse

Gently splash warm water on face and neck area

Dispense a generous amount of cleanser and lather up before applying to skin

Gently wash your face and neck for 10-15 seconds

Splash water on cleansed areas to rinse

Carefully pat the skin until dry

Never rub, scrub, or otherwise be harsh with your skin; this can cause over-drying and increased irritation

Let skin completely dry before proceeding

Step Two: Treat

Wash and dry hands to remove excessive oil that could be transferred to your skin

Dispense the appropriate dosage of 2.5 benzoyl peroxide and gently spread onto the affected areas

Once the 2.5 benzoyl peroxide has been applied, allow it to completely absorb into the skin before proceeding; you will not rinse after treatment

Step Three: Moisturize

Wash and dry hands to remove accumulated oils

Dispense about a quarter-sized amount of moisturizer and gently apply to the treated areas

Reapply moisturizer if flakiness or drying occurs

Important Tips

While using 2.5 benzoyl peroxide, it is very important to remember a few, simple strategies to ensure that your skin is treated as gently and efficiently as possible.

Do not use soap; this product often strips the skin of essential oils and causes over-drying. It can also leave a residue on the skin that can aggravate and further inflame the irritated areas.

When using 2.5 benzoyl peroxide solutions, it is important to slowly build up the dosage amount. Beginning with the smallest recommended dosage, slowly work up to the highest measure of 2.5 benzoyl peroxide solution allowed. The skin needs an adjustment period in order to become accustomed to 2.5 benzoyl peroxide; this amount of time will vary, but is considerably less than that need when using higher concentrations.

The skin around the eyes is substantially thinner than the rest of the face, thus avoid these areas to prevent sensitivity issues.

Take your time while using 2.5 benzoyl peroxide; allowing the product to fully absorb will give the medication the time it needs to properly treat the affected areas.

Many teenagers, and young adults alike, use benzoyl peroxide products without even knowing it. As a matter of fact, people from nearly all walks of life – regardless of age, gender, race, or ethnicity – use this common organic compound. With its many uses, benzoyl peroxide products are nearly as commonplace as sand is in a desert.

Common Benzoyl Peroxide Products

In the world of medicine, benzoyl peroxide products are well-known for their acne treating properties. Most of this type of product can be purchased without a prescription and can be found in nearly any department or drug store across the nation; such acne treatments can come in cleanser, foam, lotion, or salve forms. As with most over-the-counter purchases, benzoyl peroxide products should be used carefully; avoid eye, nose, and mouth contact while using only on the affected areas. Consult a physician if extreme irritation occurs and persists for an extended period of time.

Other Uses

Though benzoyl peroxide products are fairly common, there is a side to this organic compound of which few people are aware. As could be assumed by its name, benzoyl peroxide is in the peroxide family – a related set of compounds renowned for their bleaching properties. Along with its many uses as acne and blemish treatments, it is also used for bleaching flour, dyeing hair, and whitening teeth.

Similar to many of its peroxide relatives, benzoyl peroxide products have powerful bleaching qualities and should be handled with extreme care. Careless contact with fabrics or hair can cause nearly instantaneous color dampening, thus resulting in irreversible damages to the affected areas.

Side Effects

Benzoyl peroxide products have side effects typical of bleaching compounds; these include peeling, itching, reddening of the skin, and varying degrees of irritation. If any of these effects occur, discontinue use of the product until you have spoken with a physician or pharmacist. More than likely, the course of treatment will remain the same, but the frequency and amount of use may be altered to a level your body can safely handle. While using medications containing benzoyl peroxide, be sure to follow all product instructions to avoid possible negative reactions; many people rationalize misuse by believing that more is better, though this is often not the case.

Although unlikely, there are those who are seriously allergic to benzoyl peroxide products. Symptoms of such a reaction will include rash, intense itching, swelling (typically of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these side effects, immediately seek medical attention.

Other Possible Side Effects

As with many topical medications, benzoyl peroxide products may increase an individual’s sensitivity to sunlight. It is recommended that individuals using such products avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, tanning booths, and sunlamps. Decrease your chances of irritation and negative effects by wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen when out-of-doors.

Benzoyl peroxide products often contain some type of perfume or other inert additive; therefore, it is important to notify your doctor or pharmacist of all your known allergies to avoid unnecessary exposure risks.
